Who Are We?
Clarion Co-operative Homes is a co-operative community of 69 townhouses opened in 1992. Co-op Members are members of our community with modest income who accept the responsibilities of co-op membership and live by the 7 International Principles of Co-operation:
-
Open and voluntary membership without discrimination
-
Democratic control by members
-
Member economic participation
-
Autonomy and Independent
-
Co-operative education
-
Co-operation among co-operatives
-
Concern for community
Clarion Co-op is owned collectively and managed by the members. Clarion provides housing to members on a break-even basis. One of the main benefits of co-op living is the sense of community that is created. Some members say ‘it is like living in a small village than a townhouse development’.
Members of Clarion Co-op live here because it is ‘is more than just a place to live”:
-
They live in their co-op unit as long as they fulfil the responsibilities of membership;
-
They share in decision making on common issues;
-
They elect a Board of Directors annually from among themselves to manage the day-to-day business;
-
They participate in community activities that build community and participate in ways that lead to cost-effective, well-managed, well governed housing co-ops ;
-
They approve to co-op’s annual budget that determines what their monthly housing charges (rent) will be;
-
They attend and vote at member meetings at which all major decisions are made;
-
They are neighbourly and adhere to the Co-op bylaws, rules and regulations and keep the peace for the enjoyment of everyone.
